What is ICL in eye surgery?
Implantable Contact Lens (ICL) is a new intraocular lens that can be implanted into the eye permanently without removing the natural lens. The lens is used to correct a wide range of visual problems including farsightedness, nearsightedness, and astigmatism.
-
Is ICL better than LASIK?
Unlike LASIK, ICL is a new technology that corrects vision problems without reshaping or removal of any corneal tissue. This makes it an excellent choice over LASIK as the lenses can produce ultra-clear, sharp vision, offers UV protection, often produce better night vision results, and the procedure is also reversible, should there ever be a need. ICL can also correct a wider range of prescription or refractive error and is suitable even for thin and irregular corneas unlike LASIK.
-
Who is not eligible for ICL?
ICL surgery is generally a great option for most patients. Those who are not eligible for the surgery include pregnant/breastfeeding patients, with existing eye disease/s such as glaucoma or cataract, and those with existing health condition/s that may hamper the healing process. Patients will undergo a comprehensive screening process to ensure that they are suitable for the surgery.
-
How long can ICL last?
The ICL is intended to stay in place and last indefinitely. Should the need arise, the ICL can easily be removed or replaced.
-
What is the success rate of ICL surgery?
The success rate of ICL ranks high, with a satisfaction rate of 99.9%. With Lasik surgery. the cornea of the eye is reshaped which can take a bit more time. With ICL, no need exists to reshape the cornea since the implantable lens is simply implanted in the eye.
-
How long does it take for ICL surgery?
ICL eye surgery is done in the office as an outpatient procedure. In the hands of an experienced ICL surgeon, the surgery takes about 5-10 minutes per eye. This is about the same time that is needed to perform LASIK surgery. ICL eye surgery is done with a local anesthetic drops, to numb the eyes.

For over 40 years old, we have a presbyopia ICL. ICLs function like contact lenses to correct refractive error.
-
Why do people get ICL?
ICL is often positioned as an excellent option for patients who do not qualify for LASIK; however, ICL is not only for those patients. In fact, ICL can correct a wide range of refractive errors, and goes beyond the limitations of other procedures such as LASIK.
Studies have shown that ICL offers the best quality of vision and offers more benefits for patients out of all the refractive procedures
